Hello Kiwi,
I'm sorry to hear you are going through a difficult time. I've had SD for 18yrs and ,like you, experienced the disorder as I was starting my "dream job". As a financial advisor, I'm required to use my voice everyday both on the phone and in person so I know exactly how you feel. I haven't heard about the raw diet but I would be careful and check with your doctor.
A few ideas which may help you out: You may want to seek out a good speech pathologist and psychologist. I utilized both when I was starting out and they can help you with your voice and in dealing with the emotional aspects. Also, I think staying in good physical shape has also helped me to reduce stress and stave off other illnesses.
Last, when I meet new people (clients etc) I usually tell them up front that I occassionally have voice problems and this greatly reduces my stress level. On the phone, I often just say I have allergies (which I do) rather than get into a long explanation depending on the person.
I hope these ideas will help you out. If your dream is to become a police officer then keep at it. You can do it. I was told I would not make it as an advisor and 18yrs later I run a successful practice. I also coach hockey and baseball and refuse to let SD run my life. You can do the same.
Let me know how you make out.

Bill
