Edit
I only take it when I need it. It seems to help me the most when my botox is wearing off and I need a little relief. I've been doing that for about 2 years now. When my voice is really bad, its not strong enough to make much of a difference.

For example, I'm due for a botox injection right now. My voice isn't really bad, but its starting to crack. I took a whole one the night before a job interview (which was 2 nights ago) and talked clearly the whole day. However, a few months ago, I was overdue for botox and it didn't help me at all, so its not a perfect solution but I like having it on hand.

To get off of botox, there's lots of medications out there to try. Its really trial and error, as I'm sure you know. It could take awhile before you find one that gives you some relief. Its definitely taking the time to look into it.
