Edit
I have been struggling with this diagnosis of SD for about a year now. I am a teacher and stress a great deal about working with the voice that I am faced with. My voice began to change in Feb of 2009, and I continued to teach until the end of the school year. My students could barely hear or understand me, as my voice broke more and more. I found a Dr. in Boston who diagnosed me with SD and had me go to voice therapy. The voice therapy didn't help. At the time, I was pregnant and unable to receive botox shots. Since then, I have not returned to teaching for the 2009-2010 school year and have been out with Dr.'s notes. I recently had my first Botox shot in Dec. but didn't get good results. I had a "good" voice for about 7 days, if that. My next shot is scheduled in a few weeks, which I know will need a stronger dose. I'm wondering if my voice will ever have the ability to have a good enough volume and projection again for teaching? Right now, the louder I try to talk, the more it breaks. I really have a hard time even calling my daughter's name in the house. I am super stressed about all of this. I try to be positive but it's hard not knowing how everything will turn out. I am also going for voice therapy, again, recommended by my Dr. Any advice from fellow teachers? What can I expect a "good" voice to be like with Botox in relation to being able to teach? I am not at the point where I feel comfortable using a voice amplifier. I'm soon faced with taking a medical leave of absence which is unpaid and I feel that I don't have much of a choice. Thank you so much.
