Edit
Hi Jill,
I had SD at the age of 26 and started my teaching career in sp. ed. at the age of 32. I'm now 63 and am still teaching sp. ed. I too have taken botox for the past couple of years because of pressure from my current SD. I teach RSP by the way at the elementary level. I'm now opting for surgery because after all of these years I'm tired of it.

For about 20 years I had no treatment and was still able to teach and my students understood me. In teaching the young ones their sounds, I had my teaching assistant do that. Now our job is mostly paperwork and managing anyway.

The last couple of years have been rough because the School District started trying to get me to retire and hassled me all the time. So the union lawyer defended me after the principal said "I don't like your voice." The School District backed down after that because we are protected under the American Disabilities Act.

I would encourage you not to give up teaching. You are an excellent role model for your disabled students. The school can and must accommodate you......with an amplifier or whatever. My teaching assistant is my right hand. I work in small groups. The majority of my students and their parents love me.
